Summary: The article analyzes some of the changes that have occurred in the North Russian manuscript literature of the Peter the Great era compared with the Old Russian period. The materials for the study were handwritten books from the Karelian collection of the Pushkin House, Old Believer literature and hagiographic works. An original phenomenon of the Northern Russian literature of this era is the literary school of the Vyg Old Believer Community, which has assimilated the traditions of Old Russian writing and the Baroque style. The hagiographic works of the Peter the Great era are characterized by increased documentality and an active penetration of folklore. A new phenomenon of hagiography of this time is the transcription of some lives of saints or their fragments in verse (verse editions). The analysis of handwritten books of the XVIII century from the Karelian collection of the Pushkin House indicates that their repertoire is limited mainly to Old Russian "soulful" works, secular fiction works have not yet entered the reading circle of local residents. Much attention is also paid in the article to the Alphabet of 1717, compiled in the Paleostrovsky monastery and encouraging young readers to study.
