Summary: The Indian National Congress in the early years of its existence advocated the preservation of British
rule. In the conditions of colonial dependence relations with Anglo-Indians were important for the Congress. In 1880s,
the national movement became a new factor in the socio-political life of India, to which the Anglo-Indian community
reacted in various ways. A liberal part of the community took an active part in the creation and development of the
Congress, but the majority perceived its activities negatively. At present, the issue of the relationship between the Anglo-
Indians and the national movement remains poorly understood, but peculiarities of the national movement and the
factors that influenced it had a great influence on the development of modern India. The purpose of the study is to
identify the features of the relationship of the early Congress with the Anglo-Indian community, the role of Anglo-Indians
in the formation of the organization and its reaction to the development of the national movement in India. Based
on the historical-genetic method and historical analysis of sources, conclusions are made that сriticism of the Congress
by Anglo-Indians found expression in journalism, public discussions and support for opponents of the national movement.
This position led to the intensification of contradictions between the Congress and the community, which had a
great impact on the development of the national movement. The results can be used in the study of the political development of colonial societies, the socio-political thought of Asia at the beginning of the XX century. |
