Summary: The article addresses the creation and transformation of the site of memory related to the visits of Peter I to the Russian North. The history of construction and restoration of the monument to Peter I in Arkhangelsk, being presented in the framework of collective memory studies, makes it possible to identify how the monumental commemoration was discussed in the local community, to trace the interaction between the local memorial culture and the official historical narrative of the Russian Empire, and later the Soviet state. Based on documents from the State Archives of the Arkhangelsk Region and local press, the article presents the main stages of constructing the site of memory and commemorative practices associated with it, as well as specifics of interaction between their participants. The authors show that the monumental commemoration of Peter I was based not only on the events of local history, but, highlighting the Poltava victory as a key event, was focused on the military history of the Russian state.
