Summary: The paper summarizes fragmentary knowledge about the snake in mythology and folklore of the Kola Sami people and Pomors in a holistic view. Semantics and symbolism of the snake seem to be in detail described concerning other ethnic groups of northern neighbouring territories. However, this article is the first attempt to examine a similar subject on the material of the Murmansk region. The research is based on essays of 19th and 20th centuries, dictionary data and field materials collected by the author in the period 2014–2019. The snake image is poorly preserved in the oral tradition of the Kola Sami and Tersk Pomors, but it is represented in modern cultural activities as a regional brand and relevant factor of both territorial branding and ethnographical tourism. This study can be complemented by craft workers of the Kola Peninsula with snake figures and also enhanced through comparative method.
