Summary: The article reflects on the need to use Russian chronicles for the study of the era of Peter the Great. It deals with, as an example, the data provided by 18th century Russian chronicles – such as the Dvina Chronicler, the Chronicle of Lev Vologdin, the Vologda Chronicle, the Chronicler of the Solovetsky Monastery – on the 1694 trip of Peter I to the Solovetsky Monastery. Particular attention is paid to an unpublished and little-known account of the Petrine era – the Special Composition Chronograph researched by the article author.Further search and research of so far unknown accounts on this topic should be conducted in archives and manuscript collections with the purpose to introduce them into scientific circulation. This task seems to be especially relevant because even in modern works this event is often addressed basing not on historical sources, but on retelling the works of the 19th century researchers or popular writings of the same time. Even such an outstanding historian as S. M. Solovyov in his “History of Russia” briefly mentioning this event does not refer to any sources.
