Summary: The article is devoted to the folklore component of the comic in S. Dovlatov’s creative writing, the results
of its study by literary scholars, and the still not fully disclosed potential of the folkloristic approach to the problem.
Researchers agree that the folklore origin of the comic in S. Dovlatov’s works is manifested primarily through the
writer’s address to a folk anecdote and “marginal” folklore characters (losers, triksters, lazy people, etc.). The additions
in the article include the author’s use of paremias and aphorisms, their narrativization in a laughing and serious laughing
mode; the analysis of the ethnocultural concepts behind the paremias, which are key for S. Dovlatov (fate, wealth –
poverty, laziness, etc.); identifying the role of repetition (in the form of an ascending or descending gradation) both on
the verbal and motivational levels; the principles of the selection of poetonyms and their function in creating a laughing eff ect. These provisions in the article are illustrated by the microplot of the story “A Foreign Wonam” (“Inostranka”) (the story of Arkady Lerner’s enrichment after emigrating to the USA). |
