Summary: The paper aims at tracing specific features of how the Russian Tzar Peter the Great is represented in socalled
“Records of Literary Journeys” by South Koreans, in relation with A. S. Pushkin’s poem “The Bronze Horseman”,
as well as in finding the reasons for such features to be formed. The paper continues the author’s publications on a
subject, which is new for the Korean Studies in the West, i.e., specifics of perception on South Korea of Peter the Great
and his activities. Such phenomenon as “Records of Literary Journeys” has not been studied as well. Starting from the
1990s, after the establishment of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea. Saint Petersburg became a popular
tourist rout for the “literary journeys”, i. e., visiting places related to literature and its authors. Among other sights, the
monument called “The Bronze Horseman” receives a special attention in such records. South Koreans got familiarized
with it owing to the translation by the specialists in Russian literature. The research tasks on the paper comply with its
aim as well as with the specifics of the material and include the following: to tackle on the reasons why the Bronze
Horseman is popular among the literary roots by South Koreans, to trace the main repeating comments related with
Peter the Great in the records, to make an attempt to group them for the further study of the prerequisites for their
forming, to draw the conclusion basing on the cultural and historical context. The conclusion of the paper, informing on the reasons why the authors of the records focus on the figure of the Tzar rather than the literary content, bases on the cultural dominants related to the understanding the role of text in Korean weltanschauung. |
