Summary: The First World War led to the emergence of a special social group in the Olonets province. These people were known as civil captives. They were citizens of hostile states who found themselves in Russia after the start of the war. Civil captives in the Olonets province have not yet been studied by historians. There is a complex of cases related to the civil captives in the funds of the National Archive of Karelia. It has been prepared a special database which is based on these documents. The analysis of the database made it possible to form a general idea of the civil captives in the Olonets province. In addition, considerable attention is paid to the study of the everyday life of the civil captives, their relationship with the authorities and especially with residents. It was found that despite of significant ethnocultural differences the local population did not express aggression towards the new social group. The civil captives were in Karelia temporarily. They left this territory after the end of the war.
