Summary: Memory spaces of the main urban cultural societies (Swedish, Finnish and Russian) were formed in the
urban space of Vyborg in the beginning of the 20th century. The result of this process was installation of a monumentof the “hero”. This installation caused confrontation between urban elites, which was reflected on the pages of the press
of the Grand Duchy of Finland. This article examines the collision of interests and ideologies in Vyborg, when the
monument of Peter the Great was supposed to be installed in 1910. The conflict of the historical memory by urban
cultures is issue in the framework of collective memory studies and becoming of national identity in most detached region of Russian Empire. The installation of a monument of the Peter the Great timed to celebrate of the 200 years anniversary of Vyborg siege was received with hostility by Swedish and Finnish elites. |
