Summary: The article is the first of its kind to present a detailed biography of the Governor of Tara, Saratov and Olonets Vasily Aleksandrovich Choglokov, one of the representatives of the Russian ruling elite in early modern period. Earlier historiographical sources contain only the biographical accounts of his life in Olonets. The author uses a large number of published documents to trace the life and career milestones of this state servant, originally from the town of Toropets. In the Time of Troubles, he as a boyar received a quarter of all the tributes taken from the people of the Kostroma quarter of the Russian state and later became a Moscow tenant at the court of Mikhail Romanov. Then we see him as a solicitor, a steward, and a Moscow nobleman. At the pinnacle of his career, Choglokov was a member of the Boyar Duma in the rank of an okolnichy. Studying Chоglokov’s biography helps to shed light on little-known pages of the country’s history related to the organization of state government, civil administration and military command systems in the border counties.
