Summary: Russian sailors wrote several diaries during the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905. Some of which, for
various reasons, they did not keep the names of their authors. To partially solve this actual problem, the article examines
the diaries of “unidentified persons” who served in the 2nd Pacific squadron under the command of Vice Admiral
Z. P. Rozhestvensky, in order to restore their names. Based on the diary notes, in which the authors revealed the facts of
their biography, conclusions were made about the hypothetical authorship of the diaries. Attention was also drawn to
the names of seamen mentioned in the diaries in the third person, because, excluding them, it was possible to narrow
the range of possible authors. 5 diaries were studied, and 4 names were called, who possibly could be authors of the
manuscripts. The information obtained about the authors of these sources added to the knowledge about these diaries
and about the events of this war in General. Thanks to attribution, it became possible to use diaries in the study of
biographies of Russian Navy sailors. The results of the research can be used by historians, employees of archives and libraries, compilers of reference books and guidebooks, which also makes the scientific novelty of the research. |
