Summary: At this time there is not any research devoted to the analysis of contemporary publications on Saint Petersburg museums that emerged during the epoch of Nicholas II. This article is the first attempt to fill this gap. The topic is relevant due to the fact that museums occupy a prominent place in the historical and cultural heritage of the country, and St. Petersburg is the founder of museum construction. The article presents a generic classification of museum publications, gives their grouping, traces the publication activity of the sources, and indicates the practical importance of the work. The analysis of published sources will make it possible to reconstruct the history of Saint Petersburg museums, the most important region of the country, and to determine the place and significance of the identified works in the study of museum history. Each presented publication has made a certain contribution to the comprehension of museum activity, contributed to the study of museums, development of historiography of museum work, transfer of experience to other cities. The study used general principles of history: objectivity, science, historicism, as well as methods: chronological and comparative-historical.
