Summary: The article analyzes the works of Russian orientalists on some problems of the reform movement in China at the end of the XIX-th century. The first thing to be noticed is that the investigation of the reformist opposition of the Qing government in the Soviet historian’s works helps us to understand what difficulties Chinese scholars had to deal with when studying these issues. We analyze the works of the world-famous orientalist, academician Sergei Leonidovich Tikhvinsky (1918–2018). He made a great contribution to the study of the ideological views of the reformers and their activities in 1895–1898 in the context of the international situation. Researcher revealed the importance of the reform movement in the struggle for a new China. It should therefore be concluded that S. L. Tikhvinsky’s research were innovative for Soviet Sinology and occupy a prominent place in it now.
