Summary: The article reconstructs the chain of changes in the development of oikonyms in the territory of Lake Syamozero,
refl ected in the written sources over the second half of the second millennium AD. The author studied historical documents
dating back between the XVI and the XX centuries to observe the dynamics of the oikonymic system. Three
oikonymic models with common anthroponymic origins were analyzed: oikonyms with the formant -l/-lu, oikonyms
that include the structural component selgy meaning ‘mountain’ or ‘hill’, and oikonyms that are identical to anthroponyms.
The relevance of the study was to identify a certain chronological distribution in these models. It was also proved
that there are two levels of nomination – an offi cial and an unoffi cial one. The article demonstrates that two names of
the same settlement can exist simultaneously: one can appear in the documents of the past centuries, while another can be used in oral practice. It also traces the etymology of names originating from calendar and non-calendar names. |
