Summary: The traditional culture of the Karelians has repeatedly become the object of study of ethnographers. Maternity rituals and traditional medicine were not an exception, to which the scientific research of the authors of this article will be addressed. The aim of the study is to comprehensively determine the function of the furnace in the maternity ritual and the treatment of childhood diseases in Karelians using comparative-historical, ethnolinguistic and comparative methods. For the first time, data collected from various sources (dictionaries of the Karelian language, samples of Karelian speech), as well as field materials of the authors will be introduced into scientific circulation. At the moment, a comprehensive study on the semiotics of the Karelian furnace has not been conducted, which determines the relevance of this study. As a result of the study, the symbolic significance of the furnace in the Karelian maternity ritual and traditional medicine (for example, diseases of children of the first year of life) was revealed on folklore, linguistic and ethnographic material.
