Summary: The article based on the material of literary works by Viktor Pulkin discusses the problem of folklore and literary relations.
The novel “The Azure Jacket” and its folklore sources (legends about Peter the 1st and Vytegra dwellers) are
analyzed. The purposes of the article are to trace the directions and methods of literary processing of folklore traditions;
to describe cases of rearrangement of semantic accents in the early and later versions of the story. The conclusions of
the study are as follows: the source of the “Azure Jacket” was a cycle of legends about the stolen royal clothing, about
Peter the 1st and the Obryadins, more specifically – the text recorded by N. A. Krinichnaya and V. I. Pul’kin in Vytegra
in 1971. In the literary retelling, the main features of the folklore text are preserved: its composition, sequence of motives,
characters, linguistic framework, and style. The title “The Azure Jacket” does not exist in the folklore tradition,
it is the fruit of the writer’s imagination. In literary retelling, topographic accents are different in comparison with the
folklore source. With the help of more active use of verse-like fragments, elements of colloquial, dialect vocabulary,
interjections, the humorous cultural context of the plot was reinforced in literary texts. The later version contains more
details; it is more complicated in terms of composition; it is decorated with ornamental elements. For example, under
the influence of legends about historical persons, a description of Peter’s look appears; in the literary story, an indication
of the profession of the narrator (the carpenter) is introduced. The source of this detail is the personality of the writer himself. In the later version, the opposition of the corporeal and spiritual, perishable and eternal is sharpened; the theme of historical memory is enhanced. |
