Summary: The article discusses two discourses in the image of the sorcerer in Russian art of the late XIX - early XX centuries: 1) ethnographic discourse – the artist seeks ethnographic authenticity of the image of the sorcerer; 2) historical and mythological discourse – the artist refers to the world of Ancient Russia being constructed in his mind, one of the iconic fi gures of which is the sorcerer. The artistic canvases of M. V. Maksimov (“The Sorcerer’s Parish at the Wedding”), M. V. Nesterov (“For the Love Potion”), N. K. Roerich (“Vedun”, “Sorcerers”, “Sorceres”) are analyzed. The visual material is compared and verifi ed by the texts of mythological stories. The article proposes a project to create a database of artistic and visual materials refl ecting folklore and ethnographic issues.
