Summary: In the present paper author explores the problem of genre synthesis based on the material of the novel by Johanna
Sinisalo “Enkelten Verta” (“Blood of Angels”). The author analyzes the Finnish literary movement “suomikumma”,
designed to challenge the tradition of realistic writing, which has long dominated the Finnish literary scene. In addition
to J. Sinisalo, modern Finnish writers such as Lena Krohn, Emmy Itäräntä, Antti Tuomainen and Tiina Raevaara act as
active members of suomikumma. Diff erent classifi cations of genre characters of both fantasy and science fi ction are
compared. The author comes to the conclusion about the synthesis of genres in the novel by J. Sinisalo, highlighting the
most fundamental features. So, fantasy gave the novel a detailed elaboration of the described world, a special role of
mythology and environmental topics. In addition, the central idea of the work is based on the thought experiment of D.
Suvin’s, referring us to the “novum” as the fundamental tool for creating a fi ctional world. It is concluded that “Blood
of Angels” has features characteristic of both fantasy and science fi ction: the fantasy world becomes an actor and takes an active position in relation to its heroes, and the time of action is transferred to the near future, where environmental problems, emerging in our time, are becoming global. |
