expedition		 Summary: For the first time in the article is carried out the analysis of history of Russian academy of science awards and encouragement of scientists. Till present time, there isn’t the generalizing work in historiography, covering the entire history of the Academy’s awards practice. The article covered the Saint-Petersburg’s stage of Academy’s existence (1724–1934). The purpose of the article is to consider the stages of formation awarding’s practice for scientific activity, its forms and features. The article identified and first introduced into scientific circulation the materials from the funds of the Russian state historical archive and the St. Petersburg branch of the archive of the Academy of Sciences. It is shown the history of creation of the most significant nominal awards of Academy of Sciences and their influence on attraction to Academy of Sciences non-academician researchers. The article based on the modern historical methods (historical-genetic, retrospective, typological, structural, archival heuristics, etc.), as well as methods of social history of science (the relationship of science and the state, science and other social institutions).
