Summary: The article pays attention to the concept “family” and its function in the poetics of the novel Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The fragments with the nuclear lexical items of the nominal fi eld of the concept “family” are analyzed. Such features of the concept “family” as family unit, mercy, decency) traditional for Russian linguistic world image are shown. Author’s features of the concept “family” as family breakdown, misery, unhappiness, death, slavery and disease play an important role in the expanding novel’s content and the portrayal of the towns in the reform years and: the breakdown of society and ways out of the crisis are shown. And, besides, Dostoevsky pays his attention to the moral and social aspects of family relations. That is why the concept “family” has a key role in the book sense and poetic: development of the narrative, composition and character structure.
