Summary: The Socio-economic development of the Russian Arctic is impossible without the creation of an integrated transport
infrastructure of the region, including water: sea and river, land: road and rail, as well as aviation communications. For
longer than a century and a half, specialists, politicians, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts are trying to solve the problem.
Dozens of future transportation projects are nominated. The vast territory of polar Urals, Northern Siberia, the Far East,
the Russian coast of the Arctic ocean, channels of the Siberian rivers are explored. Thousands of miles of communications
are laid, but a single transport network of the Russian Arctic is still not created. The core of the transport infrastructure
of the region can be the Transpolar railway, the all-season line-the link of the existing TRANS-Siberian railway with
branches, Siberian roads, the Northern Sea Route, navigable Siberian rivers and regional airports. The completion of this ambitious project will increase the capacity of the Russian segment of the Asia-European transport corridor, expand the socio-economic importance of the Russian Arctic, strengthening the strategic importance of Russia. |
