Summary: The relevance of this topic is determined by the need for objective analysis and evaluation of the events of the Civil war
in Karelia (1918–1920) and also interference of foreign states (in particular Finland) in internal affairs of the RSFSR.
Based on previously unpublished archival documents and memoirs sources the military-political situation in the North-
West Russia in spring and summer of 1919 is analyzed; numerous facts of Finland’s interference in the internal affairs of
the RSFSR are covered; subversion of the Finnish political and military leaders aimed at inciting separatist sentiments
among local Karelian population is revealed; the role of Olonets volunteer army as a tool for the implementation of
aggressive plans of military and political leadership of Finland is discovered. The Finnish Olonets “volunteer’s” campaign
(1919) is a typical example of open military intervention against the Soviet Republic to reject Russian Karelia.
Measures taken by the Revvoensovet of the Republic and by the command of the 7th army, Baltic naval forces and Onega
flotilla in spring and summer of 1919 to repeal aggression, was not always effective due to objective and subjective
reasons. In the North-West of Russia (as throughout the country) was a complex process of formation of the Red army
and the Red army from the fragments of the Russian Imperial army and the Russian Imperial Navy. Significant contribution
to the creation of efficient armed forces of the Soviet republic was made by former officers of the Russian Empire, participants of the First World War (1914–1918) who took command of armies, divisions, regiments, fleets, flotillas and ships in a difficult period of the National history. |
