Summary: The article provides an overview of translations into Karelian language of Gospel texts and prayers, published in 1907–1908 in the
unofficial section of Olonets Diocesan Gazette, which have not yet come to the attention of linguists, with a view to introducing
them into scientific circulation. The publication of the translations was explained by several reasons: the low level of Russian language
knowledge among the parishioners of the Karelian parishes; the revitalization of missionary work on Lutheran propaganda;
recognition of the Karelian language as “missionary language”. During the year long period 14 original texts of translations (one of
those twice) were published on the pages of the gazette. Each of them fixes Karelian dialect speech of the early 20th century. The
main part of the texts is the spoken Livvi Karelian dialect of the Karelian language common in the vicinity of Olonets town. Of the
total number of translations, the very first, the Easter Gospel in Karelian language, published in No. 6 of the gazette in 1907, stands
out. Phonetic and morphologic analysis makes it possible to attribute it to the South Karelian dialects of the Karelian Proper, namely
to the southern Paatene, or to the adjacent northern Mätyselkä or eastern Porajärvi dialects. In addition, the Karelian-language texts
presented on the pages of Olonets Diocesan Gazette can expand the list of objects for studying the process of the Karelian writing formation. The article provides an overview of the linguistic translations of Gospel texts and prayers published in 1907–1908 in the unofficial section of the Olonets Diocesan Gazette magazine. |
