Summary: The purpose of the article is to reconstruction of the socio-political and literary context related to the circumstances of publication and initial assessment of the V. I. Belov’ s novel “Business as usual” by variousgroups of the Soviet political and literary elite. Ideological uncertainty that arisen after the N. S. Khrushchev’s resignationin the fall of 1964, prevented both the appearance of the story in the prestigious magazine “New World”, andits timely assessment in current literary criticism. Forcedcensorship reductions in the publication of “Business as Usual” in Petrozavodsk Magazine “The North” demonstrates the difficulties that writers faced in mastering the themes of the Soviet village. Wide public recognition of the novel stopped emerging discrediting work in the mass media and contributed to its serious discussion. The aspect of the creative history of the key text of “village prose” earlier in scientific literature was not considered.
