Keywords: Karelian toponymy models of placenames area Karelia Livvi-Karelians geographical term |
Summary: Geographical terminology (including terms of lowland relief) is the most popular semantic group of vocabulary in the formation
of toponyms. The article points toponymic stems of the territory of Lake Syamozero, that represent lowland relief (Alho-, Alango-,
Kurzu-, Uitto-, Lyöžy-). Also the problem of linguistic and ethno-cultural relations of the territory of Lake Syamozero at different
times is solved. For this purpose, etymological origins of the terms are considered: there are both original Baltic-Finnish lexemes
and borrowings of different times among them. Areas and ethno-linguistic processes are also analyzed. Each of the terms differs in
its semantic shades and age. Their toponymic activity varies. It is proved that this activity is related to the character of the use of
the place described by the term. The actuality and novelty of research is in the use of the areal-typological method of analysis of the
toponymic material for the decision of ethno-historical task. It is proved that the territory of Lake Syamozero was connected with
the Karelian Ladoga area, through the territory of which Finnish and early Russian borrowings penetrated. The source for research
is based on data from the field research card of placenames of the Institute of Language, Literature and History (Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Science), and Toponymic archive of Finland. The dictionaries of the Karelian and Finnish languages,
both sensible and etymological, were actively used. |
