Summary: The main patterns of measures aimed at improving church singing in the Olonets Diocese are examined. The relevance of the topic is linked to the special, unchanging liturgical significance of church singing both during the period under study and in our own time. The novelty of the research is determined by the absence of previous works and the complete lack of study of the topic presented in the article, relying on materials from northern dioceses. The main conclusions of the article are as follows. Judging by the materials from the consistory’s office records and articles in the diocesan press, the spiritual authorities and laypeople consistently and persistently put forward demands to the clergy that were similar in form and content and related to “decorum” in liturgical practice. Under the influence of the steadily growing demands from the spiritual leadership and laypeople, church singing became an important element in the training of clergy, turned into one of the mandatory subjects in parish schools, and provided a significant opportunity to support and develop musical talents among adult parishioners. The main trend in the development of choral music in the diocese has been the involvement of a wide range of parishioners in full participation in services through the regular performance of church music together with the clergy.
