Summary: Russian forest terminology lexicography is an understudied and relevant area of scientific inquiry. To
date, the Prototype Dictionary of Forestry Terminology by P. N. Verekha, the first major Russian terminological dictio-
nary of forestry at the turn of the XX century, has not been the subject of specialized description or research. Verekha’s
dictionary draws on an extensive scientific database of its time and reflects the formation of specialized terminology in
Russian forestry. This article examines the prerequisites for the dictionary’s creation, its structure, fundamental organizational principles, typology of entries, and the nature and methods of presenting the materials. The results of a comparative-historical and lexicographic analysis indicate Verekha’s attempt to create an encyclopedic-type terminological dictionary and standardize specialized forestry vocabulary based on the resources of the Russian vernacular. Distinctive
features of this lexicographic work include intertextuality, the compiler’s interest in linguistic (etymological) and linguocultural issues, and a polemical style of presentation. A more detailed study of the dictionary’s materials may help reconstruct gaps in the history of the scientific language of Russian forestry. |
