Summary: The purpose of this article is to identify existing gaps and identify promising areas for the development
of Karelian lexicography, taking into account the needs of the linguistic community. To achieve this goal, the paper
addresses the following tasks: reviewing the main stages in the development of the Karelian dictionary tradition from
the XVIII century to the present day; describing known lexicographic publications in the Karelian language containing
vocabulary in the Livvi dialect; and analyzing the changes these dictionaries have undergone over time. Currently,
linguists are working hard to create new electronic dictionaries of the Karelian language. The relevance of this article
stems from the importance of understanding the experience of Karelian lexicography in past years, since without a
retrospective analysis of this topic, the further consistent development of the lexicographic tradition is impossible. The
novelty of this article lies in its first focused and comprehensive examination of publications recording Livvi vocabu-
lary, and its identification of the qualitative changes in approaches to its selection and description that occurred at different stages. The research, which employed philological and lexicographic methods of analysis, led to the conclusion that over the past three hundred years, the formation of the lexicographic tradition has gone through several stages: from written notes through the creation of school and bilingual academic dictionaries, and ultimately to the emergence of a
modern electronic resource – VepKar, the Open Corpus of the Veps and Karelian Languages. Today, Karelian lexicography is at a stage in its development where existing achievements and the potential of corpus research make it possible to move on to the development of electronic dictionaries, in particular, a dictionary of synonyms of the Karelian language. |
