Summary: The article analyzes the “collective biography” of the chiefs of the regional gendarme department of the Arkhangelsk Province with an aim to identify the main social and personnel characteristics that could be considered significant. This formulation of the problem is relevant due to the importance of an anthropological approach to examining historical processes, which focuses on individuals and social groups. The key research method is prosopographic analysis that is used for the first time to study the gendarme personnel of the Arkhangelsk Province. Conclusions regarding changes in the approach to gendarme personnel appointment rely upon various indicators, including the age of officers at the time of admission to the Gendarme Corps and assignment to the region, experience in a similar role, and the number of subsequent appointments and promotions. It turns out that the personnel policy of the Gendarme Corps for staffing the senior position in the region had its own peculiarities in different periods, while the trend towards “aging” of personnel developed: more time passed from becoming a gendarme to appointment, professional experience was more in demand, and for many gendarmes this position became the last step in their careers.
