Summary: The article examines Britain-themed publications featured in the early issues of a famous Russian liberal journal Vestnik Evropy and assesses their significance for the development of English studies in Russia during the second half of the 1860s. This period of the journal’s formation coincided with the emergence of scholarly research on the history and culture of Great Britain in Russia. The magazine’s contributors introduced readers to various aspects of British life, published articles about its political and social development, and reflected the progress of historical science and political thought across the British Isles. Many of the authors responsible for these contributions remain unknown to us. The key role in shaping the focus of Vestnik Evropy and its writing team was played by its founder and editor-in- chief, Mikhail Matveyevich Stasyulevich, as well as by Alexander Nikolaevich Pypin, a member of the editorial board and a literary critic. Both are recognized by modern scholars as among the first Russian specialists professionally engaged in English studies. Despite including critical assessments of certain aspects of British life (particularly, the Irish question), Vestnik Evropy generally portrayed Great Britain, a leading Western European country, in a positive light to Russian readers.
