modern poetry		 Summary: The object of research is the modern translations of ancient Greek tragedy. The aim is to explore the specifics of modern translations of ancient drama by a Canadian linguist and translator Anne Carson in the context of the English translation tradition (as the history of translating ancient texts in different European countries varies de- pending on their own literary traditions). Modern translations are more of an object of literary criticism and publicistic reflection rather than of scholarly research. However, being part of Classical studies, on the one hand, and the modern literary process, on the other, they are also of special interest for researchers. While an “ideal” academic translation implies strict adherence to the principles of accuracy, equilinearity, and equimetry, a modern translation is a translation “from culture to culture” refracting ancient material in accordance with modern aesthetics. The key aspects of Carson’s poetics are visualization (playing with the length of lines and “semantic” breakdown into lines that do not correspond to the original; illustrations and comments that become part of the text; metaphorical visual reinterpretation of images), genre transformations, and actualization.
