Summary: The aim of the study was to identify and describe the pragmatic potential of the paragraph break and to
demonstrate that it can be perceived as a punctuation mark created by the author to realize their intentions and aimed at
maximizing the accuracy of reader’s interpretation of the implicit content. The theoretical basis for this study draws on
factual material of contemporary Belarusian fiction obtained through the analysis of approximately 150 prose works
by 28 Belarusian authors (including N. Adam, G. Avlasenko, L. Andreyev, L. Bogdanova, A. Butevich, V. Dovnar,
O. Zhdan, Ya. Pinchuk, M. Prokhor, E. Skobelev, A. Khomenok, A. Chizh-Litash, and others). The primary research
tool was the descriptive-analytical method, based on an inductive-deductive approach, in which an analysis of the
use of a paragraph in literary prose texts reveals its pragmatic potential. The author also used the semantic-stylistic
method, which involves determining the stylistic markings of a paragraph (i. e., the presence of evaluation, expression,
or stylistic coloring); the method of linguistic analysis, which involves identifying the system of stylistic devices for
paragraphing syntactic units of a literary text; and the communicative-pragmatic method aimed at revealing the au-
thor’s intentions through an analysis of the implicit content of a paragraph. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of using the obtained results, proposed classifications, and definitions for analyzing literary texts, as well as for the textual study of specific works aimed at investigating the individual author’s style. |
