Keywords: traditional poetic image dictionary 19th century poetry |
Summary: The article substantiates the necessity of introducing new dictionary labels in the second volume of the
dictionary Traditional Poetic Images of Russian Lyric Poetry. The XIX Century (1801–1840) to describe the semantics,
modes of creation, and interaction of traditional poetic images. The studied dictionary aims to trace the dynamics of tra-
ditional imagery in Russian poetry from the XVIII to the early XX century striving for comprehensive coverage of the
material. All of the above determines the relevance of both the dictionary itself and the present study. The lyric poetry
of the Pushkin period exhibits both a continuation of the traditions of eighteenth-century Russian poetr y in relation to
the traditional poetic image and new approaches that require special representation in lexicographic description. The
analysis of poetic word usage employed a stylistic method, based on contextual semantic-stylistic analysis, as well as a
lexicographic method focused on in-depth study and systematization of the dictionary’s objects of description. The arti-
cle specifically examines phenomena significant in early nineteenth-century poetry: 1) methods of increasing semantic
complexity of the image (where different figurative meanings converge in a single word); 2) the transition from the lit-
eral meaning of a word to the figurative during textual development; 3) the creation of “flickering meanings” by authors
(where the meaning of a word in the poem’s text remains on the borderline between literal and figurative); 4) types of interaction between image-words within the semantic structure of a specific poetic text. The article proposes dictionary labels to describe phenomena characteristic of the lyric poetry of the Pushkin period. |
