Summary: The paper addresses the aspect of relations between the folklore and primitive (lubok) traditions related to transformation of a folktale into a narrative included in a lubok compilation of tales. Primary attention is focused on the resulting changes of the functional features of the Baba Yaga character. The novelty of the approach exercised in the paper is the broadness of the contexts of comparing Yaga functions in lubok texts and in fairy folktales. Analyzed was a fragment of a tale included in a lubok compilation dated to the early XIX century. A significant dominance of the heroic aspects in the narrative resulted in that Yaga functions were correlated with the functions of the principal character, the hero. This resulted in that Yaga acquired features nonspecific for this character, including correction of goal-setting. Upon the expected manifestations of Yaga type specific for such plots, signs of functional features of other types were recorded.
