Plants		 Summary: The lexicographic description of plant names (phytonyms) is an urgent problem, since the data of existing explanatory dictionaries are incomplete, contradictory and out of date. The scientifically oriented approach chosen by lexicographers of the past can be questioned, since template interpretations often turn out to be not only uninformative, but also inaccurate or incorrect from the point of view of the natural science paradigm. The attempt to describe the plant names only as part of the scientific nomenclature led to the fact that obsolete, alternate, colloquial and other nominations were excluded from explanatory dictionaries. As a result, dictionaries began to describe an artificially limited and stylistically neutralized group of words. An analysis of modern sources, especially corpus data, leads to the opinion that explanatory dictionaries are designed to reflect not the special, but rather the everyday usage of plant names. Thus, plant names appear to be an extensive and heterogeneous group of vocabulary working in complex semantic relations: one plant may have several names that differ diachronically, stylistically, functionally, one name may refer to different plants. The lexicographic description of plant names should be based on linguistic issues.
