Keywords: space and time in the Old Russian picture of the world horizontal and vertical axis terrestrial and divine world centre and periphery colour codes postposition and preposition of definitions verbal forms |
Summary: It is considered the linguistic means of transferring space-time relations in the annalistic story “About the Murder of Borisov”.
The material of study is the text of the Laurentian Chronicle, studies by V. I. Borkovsky, S. A. Bugoslavsky, S. P. Obnorsky,
D. S. Likhachev, A. N. Uzhankova, A. A. Shakhmatov and other scientists were used. It is proved that the space in the story is organized
along the vertical and horizontal axes. On the horizontal axis, the center and the periphery are contrasted: the sinner extends
to the periphery, beyond the limits of space, and the saints (their powers) occupy the position in the centre. For this purpose the
chronicler distinguishes main characters in the plot-composition structure of the text (Boris, Gleb, Yaroslav, Svyatopolk, Predeslava,
druzhina, etc.) and geography of the events (Kiev, Vyshyorod, Smolensk, the Volga and Ltya rivers, St. Basil’s church). The signs of
the spiritual space are the definitions of the Caines and the image of the Lord. The colour codes of holiness (light) and sin (darkness)
serve as a designation of the boundary. In the story the terrestrial world is not given the colour characteristics and the divine world is
rendered symbolically: light, radiant. Past forms of the verbs reflect the change in the events of the terrestrial life, the divine world as
a timeless space is embodied by the present forms of verbs. The idea of the chronicle story was not only to inform the reader about the events of the struggle for the princely throne, to determine how the terrestrial world is connected with the divine one, but to reveal the divine side of the world and introduce the reader into a prayerful state. |
