Summary: This article presents an overview of prehistoric Tulguba rock painting discovered by archaeological
expedition of Petrozavodsk State University on the west side of Lake Onega. Это первая писаница, обнаруженная на
территории Карелии. Previously known rock paintings of the European part of Russia are located in the northern part
of the Kola Peninsula and in the upper reaches of Vishera River. Основное внимание при изучении писаницы Тул-
губа было уделено определению ее хронологии, выявлению стилистических параллелей, возможной семантике.
Tulguba rock painted was drawn with red ochre on the face of a rock cliff. It was located directly on the Lake Onega
shore in 5000–4000 BC, according to comparison of evaluation of the cliff and prehistoric sites in the lower reaches of
Suna River. Location of the rock painting on steep cliff faces that face onto bodies of water is typical for Finnish
Neolithic pictographs. Thus, Tulguba rock painting could be associated with Neolithic period. Deposit of greenish slate appropriate for making stone axes and adzes was found near the painting. Comparison of Tulguba rock painting with known analogies allows one to interpret it as a depiction of a boat consisting of a curved bottom and so-called ‘crew lines’. |
