Summary: The article is devoted to a topic that has not yet been studied in Russia. This topic is of high relevance, which is associated with the growing academic interest in Emperor Peter the Great during recent months in Russia – that is due to the upcoming three hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his birth. The article touches upon the problem of imagological perception of the phenomena of Russian culture and outstanding heroes of Russian history by the inhabitants of China, as bearers of another culture. Information on translations and translators of the Soviet historical novel “Peter the First” by Aleksey N. Tolstoy into Chinese is provided. The translation, which has become a classic and which was first published in 1986 by the Russianist Zhu Wen, is considered separately. Zhu Wen’s research works on this novel, which became the main source of information about the Russian emperor for him, are also being studied. The specificity of Zhu Wen’s perception of the image of Peter I is revealed. The ideological and cultural layers that caused it are established. Using the material posted in the Chinese segment of the global Internet, the issue of the perception of the image of the Russian emperor by a Chinese citizen Gao Hong, who in his post shared his impressions of the novel by A. N. Tolstoy, is also considered. The author of the paper also uses annotations of the novel from the sites of online stores where the novel is sold. As the main method of scientific research, the article uses the method of linguoculturological analysis.
