Summary: This article attempts to identify the idea, which organizes the artistic world of the novel written by F. Dostoevsky “Humiliated and Insulted” and “cements” the plot of the work. The analysis of the system of relations among heroes, relatedness of phrases in their statements, “semantic rhymes” of events and situations allowed us to prove the existence of such plot-idea. In “Humiliated and Insulted” all characters are tied together by kinship relationships either genetic or acquired ones; some of them betray kindred ties, others, on the contrary, try hard to restore them. It is kindred relationships of the characters that play the central ideal role in the text by F. M. Dostoevsky. The analysis of the artistic world of the novel helped to clarify the meaning of the work’s title. “Humiliated and Insulted” speaks not only about social problems but also about selfishness and heartlessness of some people (mainly, the inability to forgive) including “private” people – the most dear family members. The reality of the novel is inverted: kindred people are cursed and rejected; strangers are accepted as their own. The concepts of the kin ones and strangers lose their genetic basis in Dostoevsky’s artistic world and get filled with the deep philosophical meaning. The semantic field of kinship is an important ideological component of the novel.
