Summary: The purpose of the paper is to analyze the degree of variation of collocations and idioms (phraseological units). The relevance of the study is that there are many collocations with different degrees of stability. But there are no criteria of stability / variation of collocations and idioms. Originality is connected with using Mutual Information for predicting the variability (stability) of collocations. Mutual Information is of special statistic tool to measure the collocation strength. The research method is based on the psycholinguistic experiment and Russian National Corpus data. In the experiment 216 subjects took part. The subjects’ task was to choose a synonym for given context. For the experiment we selected 56 utterances from and Russian National Corpus data which include collocation or idiom. The results have shown that there is no direct correlation between Mutual Information and the results of experiment. Some cognitive and pragmatic features are significant for. Is it assumed that some cognitive and pragmatic features influence on selection of synonyms in utterance. These features are the idiomatic meaning of utterance, categorical meaning of the words of collocation, general utterance sense, the frequency of collocation in modern speech.
