Summary: For the first time in Russian historiography the problem of typology of the old believers’ settlement is raised. The objective of the study is to find out what rules was the way of the life of the old believers on the river Chazhenga, how these rules correspond to the name of the settlement, which emerged as the agricultural branch of the Vyg-Leksa common-community. On the basis of a wide range of sources, the time of foundation of the settlement, the name of its founder, the composition and number of settlers are specified. Particular attention is paid to the management structure and typology of the settlement, which in historiography was called the skete. As Chazhenga’ settlement was a branch of the Vyg common-community, it copied it to the device. Therefore, the inhabitants of the settlement lived by the coenobitic charter characteristic of the coenobitic monastery. The settlement had no permanent residents, it was inhabited for the period of agricultural work by the inhabitants of the Vyg’ monastery. The article deals with the issues of the first buildings and localization of the settlement. The result of the study showed that Chazhenga’ settlement is wrong to call the skete.
