Summary: In the article for the first time in the domestic ethnography the religious and mythological representations of the Karelians about the disease kalma ‘disease, which according to the beliefs of the Karelians, pestered from the grave, cemetery or deceased’ are considered. The aim of the study is a comprehensive analysis of kalma disease using comparative, ethnolinguistic and comparativehistorical methods. In accordance with the goal, the following tasks were identified: 1) to collect, systematize and determine the origin of the names of the ailment under consideration; 2) to reveal the etiology of the disease; 3) compare the concepts of kalma disease among Karelian groups living both in Karelia and in Tver (Tver Karelians) and Leningrad (Tikhvin Karelian) regions. As a result, conclusions were drawn, which made it possible to trace stable ideas about kalma only in some groups of Karelians. The disease was preceded by incorrect behavior in places or with objects related to the world of the dead, which was typical of the mythological views of the Karelian ethnos.
