Summary: Using new and little-known written archival documents, author identifies the implications and significance of “monastic” legislation of Peter the Great for the Russian Orthodox monasticism in Olonets County. The current research resolves the previously not answered question how “antimonastic” policy hold by the tsar-reformer has influenced on lives of monks who inhabited various monasteries and hermitages in Olonets County (uyezd) in the first half of the XVIII century. The analyses of the data shows that the tightening of state policy towards monasticism has led at the local level to a sharp reduction in the size of fraternal communities.
