Summary: The word – and a thing, a sign – and a subject: the problem of their relation does not lose its sharpness. The amplitude of the approaches here is very wide: from absolute naturalism, seeing in the word an exact copy of reality – to an absolute conventionalism, giving the language a complete autonomy. These are extremes. It is known that they meet – between two positions is possible if not the complementarity, then a condition of the intense, heuristically valuable dialogue excluding anyone's monopoly. The author connects genesis of language with poetry. He relies on the tradition established by A.A. Potebnyoy and G.G. Shpet – gives the interpretation of the phenomenon known as an inner form of the word. Image, metaphor: their major role in word formation is shown. Understanding limitation of a hypothesis of an onomatopoeia, the author nevertheless comes back to it – tries to bring into it new meanings, to expand its opportunities. Words can be created spontaneously – without rigid connection to those realities which they represent. From here there are the nests of synonyms. However, culture from time immemorial speaks of non-randomness of the word. As if it is implicitly contained in the phenomenon! It does not matter whether it is an objective truth – for the author there is significant value pure intention: the word is considered by him as an aesthetic reality – as the place of the game – like trope. Even if it is only seems that way. But in consciousness of culture the word is inseparable from a denotat: has with him a deep – even if established a posteriori – interdependence making a impression on us poetically. At allocation of this aspect – of course, disputable – the role of subjective, suggestive increases. But it leads to enrichment of a language palette.
