Summary: The intensification of the study of historical culture contributes to the formation of new problem fields and the search for new sources of study. The use of methods of source study of historiography for the study of historical consciousness has shown the information potential of educational essays (abstracts) of historical content. This draws attention to biographies (autobiographies) of externs, which were presented for passing the tests of maturity (final examinations) in the gymnasium. It reveals the image of everyday historical thinking in the autobiography of the extern A.F. Diesperov (1903). Source study of the conditions for the generation of autobiography allowed it to be attributed to the documentation of work. The use of historical concepts, not prescribed by documentary norms, in the process of self-determination of externalities regarded as a phenomenon of ordinary historical thinking. The use of the external concepts "historical point of view", "historical perspective", ideas about different modes of time were the usual way of his thinking activity. The set of concepts of historical character fixed in the autobiography is a reliable image of the author's historical thinking. On this basis, it is suggested that the significance of the autobiographies of externalities in the corpus of sources of the study of the historical culture of modern times determines the combination in them of the properties of document management documentation and sources of personal origin, which makes it possible to separate reasoning activity from imitating practices reasonably.
