Karelian runes		 Summary: The article deals with the views of the mythical country in Karelian epos - Tuonela and its place in Karelian world picture based on the epic rune texts. The study reveals features of the mythical topos localization, provides a description of characters inhabiting it, presents semantic interpretations of images and motifs. The method of textological and structural and semantic analysis of the rune texts is used in the work. The Kalevala metric runes collected in different years in northern and southern Karelia and published in several collections, are used as a research material. The study indicates that Tuonela accumulates the notions of the other world, the far land, the realm of the dead, which is localized not only in the horizontal plane behind the watershed, but also has some signs of correlation with the underworld, which marks the vertical structure of the universe.
