Summary: The article considers toponyms of Karelia, in which stems there are terms with the meaning ‘boat’. The author reveals a set of toponymic stems of Karelian, Russian and substrate origin; analyses them in semantic-motivational aspect; identifies geographic features, the names of which reflect the information about the water vehicles; interprets the toponymic areas of revealed naming models, determines the possible motives of nomination. During the analysis the author widely engages field research card files of names of Institute of Language, Literature and History, KarRC, RAS, GIS “Toponymy of Karelia”, the database of the Ural University Toponymic Expedition (Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg), mapping sources, a number of dialectal dictionaries. The study demonstrates the areal confinement of certain toponymic stems. The Finnic model Vene(h)- is widely represented in the northern and central Karelia, and its absence in the south, probably, should be explained by the features of the landscape and the system of settlement along the river banks. The area of the toponymic model of Russian origin Лодей- is revealed in Zaonezhye, that may be due to the special type of boat brought here by the Novgorodians. Data GIS “Toponymy of Karelia”, cartographic sources and comments of informants allow to determine the necessity of marking waterways or their important parts as a key factor in the use of lexemes with the meaning of 'boat' in the names of geographical objects of Karelia.
