Summary: The paper analyses for the first time the Karelian fairy tale “Tsar David”, recorded in 1939 in Segezha district of the Republic of Karelia and read in two languages – Russian and Karelian. The Russian version of the tale “Tsar David” is studied: the structure, which is a complex contamination of three plots, the main characters and their functions, traditional formulas, the threefold action, objects peculiar to Karelian life. Thus, a rare example of an original fairy tale for northern Karelia with realities reworked and supplemented by contemporary realities of the storyteller has been studied. Comparisons with Russian fairy tales allow us to identify ethnic features and mutual influences of different cultures, which confirms the migration of motifs, but at the same time emphasises the uniqueness of the tale “Tsar David”. The study is based on archival documents of the The Karelian Research Centre of RAS. The methods of holistic interpretation, structural, component and comparative analyses are used in the work.
