Summary: The article examines the artistic image of the main character of the popular novel by Finnish writer Emmi Itäranta “Teemestarin kirja” (Memory of Water, 2012) in the context of characterisation of a typical hero of a young adult dystopia. The novel, written with a foreign audience in mind, has been translated into 20 languages; in Finland it is positioned as young adult literature, in Russia it was announced as an ecological dystopia. The article studies the local features of the subgenre of young adult dystopia. With the help of the comparative method it was revealed that there is no rebel hero in E. Itäranta’s novel, because the problem of mankind is not in the imperfection of the political system, but in the unwillingness to interact with nature and not using nature as a source of resources. The Finnish local variant of dystopia is characterized by the protagonist’s striving to learn the truth through the discovery of history and an optimistic ending showing the reversibility of the ecological catastrophe.
